Braddock Road Improvements
ROADWAY WIDENING AND IMPROVEMENTS
The design includes vertical and horizontal alignment; right/left turn lanes; super-elevation; drainage; grading; innovative stormwater management and BMP analysis; erosion and sediment control; signing and pavement marking plan; and maintenance of traffic plan for a 4,000 LF four-lane divided highway, two signalized intersections, and two restricted movement intersections.
The Solution
THE SOLUTION
J2’s survey team scanned the intersection and developed 10-foot grid intervals to accurately define the existing pavement and limits of improvements. While honoring the high-volume lane traffic movements, the design was prepared using an overlay grid approach assisting the contractor with understanding the mill and overlay depths through the grid, providing smooth transitions through the intersection from all directions.
THE CHALLENGE
For nearly 20 years, the intersection of Braddock Road and Gum Spring Road had crossover grade breaks of over a foot requiring motorists to drastically reduce speeds through the intersection.
