At J2, we take pride in the expertise and dedication of our transportation team, whose efforts drive the success of impactful projects that enhance our communities. One such initiative is the ongoing safety and operational improvements along the Broad Street (Route 250) corridor in Waynesboro, Virginia, where our team is focused on delivering solutions to improve roadway safety for drivers and pedestrians alike.
We recently caught up with Gilmarie O'Neill-Medina, a Project Engineer on our transportation team, who shared insights into the team's role in this VDOT project and the progress they’ve made so far.
The project involves 1.3 miles of corridor improvements, replacing the center two-way left-turn lanes with designated turn bays, implementing streetscape features with raised medians, and filling in missing sections of sidewalk. These enhancements are designed to boost safety, streamline traffic flow, and improve the pedestrian experience.
Building on our team’s experience in transportation design and VDOT standards, we’ve been engaged in every phase of the project’s development. Gilmarie has served a key role in creating the 3D model, developing plans and cross sections, and preparing exhibits for public meetings - efforts that were key in advancing the project to significant milestones, including the Public Hearing Information (PFI) submission.
One of the standout features being introduced is the addition of designated left-turn lanes and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) for mid-block pedestrian crossings. “These safety enhancements are expected to significantly reduce risks for both commuters and pedestrians, making daily travel through the Broad Street corridor smoother and safer,” says Gilmarie.
Beyond the technical design, the project has provided opportunities to refine innovative approaches and strengthen collaboration. “This project allowed us to apply our knowledge of VDOT processes while tailoring alternative design solutions to meet the City of Waynesboro’s unique needs,” Gilmarie shares.
"From navigating SMART Scale applications to engaging in citizen information meetings, our team has worked diligently to balance technical requirements with community priorities.”
Coordinating the project’s many components while meeting VDOT’s requirements was no small task. “The team’s dedication and problem-solving ability were critical to advancing the initial submission, which included a grading plan, cross-section sheets, detailed cost estimates, and specialized drainage reports,” adds Gilmarie.
Stay tuned for more updates as we work toward the successful completion of this project, bringing long-lasting benefits to the Waynesboro community and its commuters.
